Human Wormholes: 108-Year-Old Woman Votes for the Very First Time

I’ve been really fascinated by the idea of a “human wormhole“. A human wormhole, in short, is when a person’s life and/or circumstances overlaps with other eras of time — resulting in this idea of a bona fide living history book. One such human wormhole I saw on my friend’s recent Facebook News Feed — a 96 year old gentleman appeared on a 1956 television show called “I’ve Got a Secret”. What was this man’s secret?

The man, who was alive for nearly a century, had witnessed Abraham Lincoln’s assassination when he was just 5 years old:

Human wormholes absolutely fascinate me — both in a macro sense — how much time can change societal norms and morés — as well as a living person who has actually seen and lived through all of these transformations.

With the presidential election looming closer and closer, one particular human wormhole story caught my eye — the story of 108 year old Joanna Jenkinsa South Carolina woman who is voting for the very first time next Tuesday.

Jenkins grew up in an era when the Jim Crow laws were fully enforced, and rampant minority voter suppression was the terrible standard. Now, over the course of her entire 108 years of life, she is a living demonstration of just how much times have changed — by participating in her first presidential election. Her inspiring story underlies that it’s never too late to voice your opinion — or in this case — your vote.
